The Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary Scheme

SAIMI is proud to announce the establishment of the Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary to enable young black women to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies in maritime-related fields and achieve success in their careers in the oceans economy.

The bursary has been created to honour the memory of Sindiswa Nhlumayo and her substantial contribution to the growth of the maritime sector and skills development in South Africa. Her leadership, her passion for the maritime economy and commitment to empowering young people to enter maritime careers, made her a much-loved role model to many.

Sindiswa Nhlumayo passed away in 2016, at the age of 45. She was the Executive Head of the Centre for Maritime Excellence at the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA). She was responsible for promoting and driving the growth of skills and human capacity in the maritime sector, promoting research, innovation and economic opportunities.

She led the development and implementation of the National Maritime Cadetship Programme (including spearheading the training of cadets on the Dedicated Training Vessel, the SA Agulhas 1) and was responsible for creating awareness of maritime careers, jobs, business and recreational opportunities, and by so doing, introducing our youth to the maritime sector. In recognition of her leadership, Ms Nhlumayo received many accolades including the IPM ‘Business Leader of the Year’ 2015 award, the Oliver Empowerment 2013 Best Female Public Servant award, and an award from the University of KwaZulu-Natal for being an exemplary alumnus.

The Sindiswa Carol ‘Tu’ Nhlumayo Merit Bursary will provide an opportunity for women from previously disadvantaged, designated groups* to pursue a career in maritime-related fields.

Bursaries will cover the full cost of tuition fees and textbooks, and recipients will also be afforded opportunities to attend selected SAIMI conferences and other local maritime-related events, and participation in organised bodies supporting women in maritime and science.

* Defined as Black African, Coloured or Indian, as per the Black Economic Empowerment Act, 2003.
