South African Maritime Industry Conference #SAMIC2017

Some 40 speakers from as far afield as Norway, Morocco, Madagascar and Nigeria addressed around 320 delegates at the second South African Maritime Industry Conference, which was hosted in Port Elizabeth during the first week of April 2017.

Speakers focused on all aspects of the maritime economy, which has the potential to create thousands of sustainable jobs in South Africa, according to Professor Malek Pourzanjani, chief executive officer of the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI), which organised SAMIC 2017.

Delegates and speakers represented industry, academia, government and financial institutions.

“When we look back at the achievements of the conference in a few years’ time I am sure that it will prove to be as much of a catalyst as the first SAMIC conference in 2012.

“One of the main objectives of the conference was to inform the strategic conversations on developing South Africa’s Oceans Economy between industry, government, investors, entrepreneurs, academia and civil society.

“Judging by the feedback we have received to date and the content of the presentations I believe that we succeeded in meeting that objective,” says Pourzanjani.

“The range of topics discussed confirms that the maritime sector goes beyond shipping, into mineral and energy resources, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture, tourism opportunities and coastal infrastructure development,” he adds.

One of the outcomes of the conference is that it has helped SAIMI to establish itself as a leading maritime institute that enables development and contributes to the maritime sector and the economy of South Africa and Africa through the effective coordination of quality education and research.

A report on the outcomes of the conference and the way forward is being prepared and will be made available shortly.
