Introduction to Ocean Matters

SAIMI invites you to enrol in the fully online Introduction to Ocean Matters Short Learning Programme (SLP) - a foundational course designed to:

• Build practical understanding of the ocean’s scientific, legal, social, and economic dimensions; and

• Enable participants to engage confidently with complex ocean challenges and support sustainable development in the Ocean Economy.



WHO WOULD BENEFIT FROM ATTENDING THIS SLP?

• Government and public sector professionals from local/provincial and national governments:

         - Responsible for the planning and management of coastal and marine areas and their natural resources; or

         - Those currently working within these areas wishing to upskill themselves.

• Intergovernmental bodies involved in regulating or managing marine sectors (e.g. environment, fisheries, tourism, transportation, energy, and sea mining).

• Blue economy actors from the private sector and civil society, or multistakeholder initiatives fostering cooperation in coastal and marine development projects.

• Anyone with an interest in the ocean or who wants to learn more about the ocean.


 
WHY CHOOSE TO DO A SAIMI COURSE?

Our SLP Facilitators are Subject Matter Experts in their respective fields of study.

• They will use participatory/interactive learning methods conveying theory with practical exercises and reflection.


 
PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Upon completing this Introduction to Ocean Matters short course successfully, participants will be able to demonstrate an ability to:

• Describe the major economic activities related to the use per nation of the natural resources of the ocean.

• Explain how to model and report the macroeconomic contribution of the ocean to an African nation's economy.

• Explain the key international, regional, and national legal frameworks, governing the maritime domain in South Africa.

• Apply legal principles to real-world scenarios in the ocean space, including maritime boundaries, environmental protection, and resource management.

• Appreciate the complex interaction between geological, biological, physical, and chemical components in the marine environment; and how these interactions impact the availability and sustainability of resources.

• Apply an understanding of the marine interactions and temporal impacts to real-world scenarios in marine operations, resource management, and policymaking.

• Explain the politics of knowledge production and knowledge dominance related to indigenous and local communities.

• Develop ideas for engaging indigenous and local communities in the work context.

 

TRAINING DELIVERY OPTIONS

1. Fully online via zoom.

2. Customized training:

• Please note that SAIMI can offer your organization a customized training delivery format for groups 15 and larger.

• Fully in-person training at your work premises (onsite); or

• Hybrid training (a combination of some in-person training and some online training)

3. In-person.

• SAIMI will also be offering the SLP in person in various major centres in each province. Watch our social media platforms for scheduled dates in your area.


 
ASSESSMENTS

• Formative and Summative Assessments will be undertaken:

• Completion of the formative activities will count 40% towards the overall mark.

• The Summative assignment will count 60% towards the final mark.

• Students need to obtain a 50% pass mark overall.



CERTIFICATION

Participants who successfully meet with all the assessment requirements of the SLP will be awarded a Nelson Mandela University Certificate of Compliance.
