Don’t miss out on an all-youth dialogue webinar taking place this Monday [June 21], themed “Fair future for seafarers”.

Don’t miss out on an all-youth dialogue webinar taking place this Monday [June 21], themed “Fair future for seafarers”.

Coming to a device near you, we will hear from diverse youth members of different ages and backgrounds from across the country, with one thing in common: a love for our oceans and the maritime sector.

The “Fair future for seafarers” webinar is the very first youth-dialogue to be hosted by the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI).

The theme of the webinar matches the theme for the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)’s 2021 Day of the Seafarer, being celebrated across the world on Friday, June 25.

As a build-up to this international event, South African youth will make their voices heard during the webinar on what a fair future for seafarers should look like.

We will hear from high school learners at maritime schools, university students currently studying towards a seafaring career, cadets currently enrolled and experiencing life at sea and youth involved in seagoing activities.

Facilitating the event will be Royal Cape Yacht Club Academy Manager Lindani Mchunu.

Questions the youth will discuss will include:

What does a fair future for seafarers look like, considering technological developments, innovation, and the Covid-19 pandemic?

Who should be responsible for a fair future for seafarers?

Is the maritime sector doing enough to encourage diversity in the sector?

The webinar will be live streamed to various maritime schools, institutions and organisations across the country.

The event starts at 12:00 on Monday, June 21, so make sure to catch it live on SAIMI’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SouthAfricanInternationalMaritimeInstitute and/or SAIMI’s YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCztU5qypu5LfpeKxv2tvUBA

The Contribution of Research and Innovation in the Oceans Economy

In an upcoming webinar, the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) will be examining the strategies for the growth of the Oceans Economy beyond the first phase of Operation Phakisa. This article, the final in a series of three in preparation for the webinar, examines the value of Research and Innovation in the Oceans Economy. The cross-cutting areas of Skills Development and Capacity Building as well as Research for the six Operation Phakisa focus areas, lie close to the Institute’s purpose, as theoretical knowledge gained through education, experience built through practical application, and the ability to generate new ideas for the sector, are narrowly linked.
