Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy for South Africa 2017

The Comprehensive Maritime Transport Policy for South Africa 2017 has been approved by Cabinet.

SAIMI was actively involved in reviewing and providing input to the policy.

“The Maritime Transport Sector is a high impact sector, which offers significant contribution to addressing South Africa’s developmental challenges,” says Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi in his foreword to the policy document.

“Notwithstanding its importance, the Maritime Transport Sector in South Africa is still developing the necessary developmental instruments to expand and play an active role in South Africa’s rapid developmental agenda.

“There exists scope to revive the maritime transport sector and enhance its contribution to the growth and radical transformation of the South African economy. Promotion and development of the sector is within the context of the broader agenda of contributing towards the global competitiveness of the country as a maritime nation alongside the leading maritime nations,” he says.

The policy also aims to contribute towards ensuring the competitiveness of South Africa’s international trade, promoting participation of local entrepreneurs in the shipping industry and ship building, promoting marine transport, ensuring sustainable funding for the maritime transport sector and creating opportunities for historically disadvantaged South Africans to participate in maritime transport initiatives.
